North Carolina

State Profile

North Carolina became in 2007 the first Southeastern state to adopt a renewable energy portfolio standard, which requires investor-owned utilities to supply 12.5% of retail electricity sales from renewable energy and energy efficiency sources by 2021. It also has the largest offshore wind resource potential, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
